The other day I was at one of my favorite burrito places here in San Francisco and was talking about internet marketing with the owner. When I mentioned the word “backlinking”, I saw a confused look on his face. I suddenly realized that the term “backlinking” while clear to me, was Greek to the business owner.

This lead me to write this post today. Some of you, depending on your internet marketing experience, may not understand the term “backlinking” so I’m going to define it for you. To put it simply, backlinking is the process of getting a link from one website to another. For those of you that want more, here is a more descriptive definition I found on the internet: “Backlinking is the process of creating links to your website. Each link means that someone is trying to inform others about some interesting page they have found.

Therefore, the number of links pointing to your site is a measure of popularity or reputation of the page. The number and quality of backlinks is the basis of the PageRank algorithm used by Google’s web search. Backlinking is very popular and the main reason for this popularity is the fact that it returns relevant results for every possible search phrase, brings you more clients and more sales.” Actually that sounds like Greek to me.
